Overview:

At Mobilize Against Poverty (MAP), we recognize that quality education is a cornerstone for breaking the cycle of poverty, especially in the marginalized communities in Port Loko District of Sierra Leone. Our education initiatives are designed to improve both access to and the quality of learning opportunities for children, youth, and adults in Portloko and Karene Districts, as well as in other underserved areas. By focusing on holistic educational support—ranging from early childhood learning and primary education to vocational training and adult literacy—we aim to foster an environment where learners of all ages can develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to secure sustainable livelihoods.

Our approach is grounded in inclusivity, gender equality, and adaptability. We work closely with local schools, community leaders, educators, and parents to identify barriers to education and develop targeted solutions. From providing learning materials and improving school infrastructure to offering teacher training and scholarship programs, our initiatives are tailored to meet local needs. We believe that education is not only a fundamental human right but also a powerful catalyst for community empowerment and long-term socio-economic development.

Current Programs:

  1. Early Childhood Learning:
We support very young children by providing storybooks, safe classrooms, and caring teachers. Starting education early helps children develop strong reading, writing, and thinking skills that last a lifetime.
  2. Primary and Secondary School Support:
We give schools the tools they need—like textbooks, desks, and clean water—so that students can learn in a comfortable and welcoming place. We also arrange tutoring sessions to help students who are falling behind catch up, making sure everyone gets the support they need to succeed.
  3. Scholarships and Financial Aid:
Many students drop out because their families can’t afford school costs. That’s why we offer scholarships and help with fees, so hardworking students can stay in school and reach their full potential.
  4. Teacher Training Workshops:
We bring teachers together to learn new and better ways to teach. They learn how to make lessons fun, interactive, and fair for every student. Good teaching keeps students interested and excited about learning.
  5. Adult Literacy and Basic Skills:
We understand that learning never ends. We run classes for adults who didn’t learn to read or write in childhood. With these classes, adults can improve their skills and feel more confident about their future.
  6. Vocational Training Programs:
We also help older students and adults learn practical job skills. For example, we have trained young people in carpentry, tailoring, and basic computer use. By learning a trade, they can earn a living and support their families. Vocational training gives people real-life skills to find good jobs and become more independent.

Resources & Publications:

  1. Learning Guides:
We create simple lesson plans and guides to help teachers plan their classes and make learning interesting for students of all ages.
  2. Reports and Research:
Our studies help us understand what works best in local schools. We use this information to make even better decisions about how to support students and teachers.
  3. Community Toolkits:
We offer booklets that show parents and community leaders how to support education at home. Simple ideas—like reading bedtime stories or creating a quiet place to study—can make a big difference in a child’s life.
  4. Monitoring and Results:
We check our progress by talking to teachers, parents, and students and by looking at test scores and attendance records. With this information, we keep improving our programs to make sure every student has the best chance to learn.
